[Ford-ferguson] Turn of the century "Buck Rake"

David
I used to use one of these on a 9N Ford in the late 40's, and I question
if you have it on the back of a truck, you may not be going fast enough.
As I remember we had to use high gear on the tractor to force it on. This
presents the problem with a buck rack as the field must be nice and level
and smooth. No ground hog holes or go across the middle furrow. We always
Drilled around the field so the teeth on the buck rake never had to go
"cross grain" to those little furrows. Even then we would hit a soft spot
and there goes an 8 foot tooth.
Rather than fork the hay that is pushed ahead - Stop and pick up the load
you have - move over top of the pushed pile and drop the load on top -
back up (go forward with truck) - then ram in again with points on ground
- this could be repeated again if you can pick it up high enough to clear
the pile.
As I also remember some people putting these on the BACK of trucks back
then - and they put an extra transmission in to boost the reverse speed.
Don't know if you have trouble pushing hay off - Ours had a gate in the
back that when forks were down two "dogs" would engage the ground or barn
floor and help push the hay off and leave in a neat pile to be picked up
by the hay hook to put into mow.
Hope this helps
