John,
I think they are the same (or very similar) coupling as used on the E4A.  The 
one used on the E4A was made by splitdorf. I had that problem 
on my Regular. The pawl and the notch it locks into were worn and the pawl  
wouldn't stay locked long enough. It doesn't need much spring pressure if the  
notches are good and sharp. 
Make sure the 2 halves of the coupling move freely and aren't gummed up  also.
