On the old Fords no matter what you do with the gear shift or engine clutch,
short of pulling the PTO out of gear, without an overriding clutch you could
wind up climbing a tree or falling into a ditch. I would never try to
operate any piece of equipment that has the flywheel effect like a rotary
Mower unless a safety clutch was installed.
At one time we had a Massey Ferguson 220-4 that had the free wheeling clutch
in the very bottom of the transmission. Five different shafts had to be
taken out of the transmission after making a double split both ends of the
transmission to get to the overriding clutch.
After the second failure of the overriding clutch we welded up solid the
internal one and installed an external unit.
