And there's the rub, Guy, having differing conditions for similar items 
depending on the source and who wants to do something with them.  If 
libraries and historical societies are so concerned about being advocates 
for the protection of intellectual property, they wouldn't post ANYTHING on 
the Internet and wouldn't even have photocopiers available for patrons to 
use when they visit the holdings in person.

The problem is just as bad or worse when it comes to public records that are 
held in our nation's court houses.  I do a large amount of genealogical work 
and am forever searching through public records for information about my 
ancestors and close relatives.  Because of problems of identity theft and 
other frauds, our nation is slowing devolving into a secret society where 
you have to be directly related to an individual in order to obtain any 
information about him or her.  It's sad and discouraging.  I doubt that 
there is anything we can do to alter the direction we're headed in this 
regard.
