I would first see what you can afford to spend. You also needto look at age of vehicle, do you plan on keeping it long. Do you want to make a show piece out of it. What type of use are these boxes getting? Do you want to spray or brush? House paint will not give you the shine, but good exterior paint will hold up. Equipment paint holds up Ok. But I would suggest a hardner in it or other wise it will shorten the life of of it quite a bit. It tends to caulk out. The hardner helps hold the shine. The automotive style Urethane will hold up the best but will be very pricey. As for you in CA there might be some restrictions on what you can use. I would check with local paint shops on this. The water base paint that was talked about earlier might be just what you need. But remember most of all ALWAYS WHERE A MASK THAT WILL PROTECT YOU FROM THE PAINT AND HARDNER. Look what you can spend and talk to the local paint store to get the most bang for your buck.

Terry, I need to paint my box trucks with signage. Can I use house paint to
do the job or does it require the use of new type auto paint? Or should I
actually use the new expensive stuff? Or old implement enamel? My budget is
seriously STRETCHED. Thanks for a few tips.
