I have a farm equipment need that the list might help me find. Last year I
was looking for a potato digger for my potato crops and a friend turned out
to have one locally that i now use. That was an amazing piece of luck,
especially since I had no idea he had it even though we talk frequently and
he lives less than a mile across the fields! This year my need is for root
harvesting machinery. I grow Turnips, Rutabagas, Carrots, Parsnips, Beets
and a number of other root vegetable crops here in coastal central
California. I need to start mechanizing the picking as labor shortages are
getting more and more profound during the spring and summer. As a result, I
am looking for machines that will help me. I cannot pay much and I assume I
will have to buy from a long distance away.
There are adaptable machines that can harvest all of these by
adjusting the settings, but there are also machines that will only do some
of the crops. I am not picky as I need to get started on the process. A
Carrot harvester would seem to be the likely best place to start. An old
Scott-Viner from the 50's or an FMC or.... Please let me know if anyone on
the list or off can help me inexpensively. Thanks to all, and I know that if
we can get off of the midwinter threads all will be back to sanity and
pleasant discourse. Thanks!
By the way, our weather has been very unusual lately - lots more frost
than any winter before but less rain than usual. I have lost some crops and
lots of production, but my veggies mostly still look very good, just not
growing the way they should. I've already started planting for spring.
