I spent a week one January day and night in Des Moines a few years back.
It was -15° with a 20 mph steady wind. Cold air was actually blowing
through the walls of the motel where I was giving a presentations. It
was the coldest place I have ever been in, and I will say that on the
cab ride out to the airport that afternoon I did not see a single
person, animal, or vehicle. I guess they were all at barbecues.
