Ok folks, here's what I found and did. I replaced the coil on
Thursday. It was good till it warmed up and was under load, then the same
rough running and cutting out. The old coil was in pretty rough shape
anyway so it wasn't money wasted. I bought a 12Volt coil that doesn't
require an external resistor. Today, I replaced the condenser, points and
rotor. The old rotor had carbon on the center button and the electrode was
pure rust. The "new" points the tractor shop put in were fried. My
brother, who has been a mechanic all his life, is figuring the points were
fried because the old coil had no internal resistor. I took it out and
brush hogged part of a field to see how she ran when warmed up and under
load. It ran great. Just like I feel it should. I will keep an eye on
the points and if they get fried again, I have some resistors in my tool
box. I will put one in line and replace the points. Thanks for all the
suggestions.
