actually all you need to do is kick up the RPMS momentarily, as soon as 
it kicks in then back off

they also do make some lower RPM rated self exciting regulators and are 
not that hard to change out. you still have to kick it up some though to 
excite.

once they have kicked in, and as long as the battery needs the charge, 
they stay in.
Yhere is a way to excite them by touch a screwdriver thru the back and 
doing a short, but I cant expleain that easily by email, I will look up 
some notes I have and pass it on to you tomorrow if I can find them. Of 
course this is for the 10SI  Delco's
