I grew up in a fruit growing area called "The Loomis Basin" I bet most of
you old timers have eaten fruit from this area. I still see box labels in
collections with Loomis, Cal on them. I remember one time in the Navy I was
getting some fruit from the frig and saw a label from home made pretty proud
since my home town was only about 350 people.
I remember seeing lots of old Fords and Chevy trucks that were made into
tractors to haul the fruit out of the orchards. 1 1/2 ton Fords were the most
popular for this.
One of my friends lived on an old farm that had one made out of Chevy one
day we spent the most of it getting it running we had a lot of fun for two
teenagers playing with the old truck/tractor. Most of them were shortened
frames and two tranny in them to gear them down for pulling. A small bed in the
back carried things for the farm.
I always wonder what happened to these old home made tractors there must be
some of them still around out there hiding in a barn or shed.
They would be fun to rebuild and take to a tractor shows.
Have any of you ever seen one of these when you were young.
