I agree with the author that the 340 series tractors are very nice 
machines. I own/owned a range of IH tractors from Cubs to 706, and my 
Farmall 340 row crop is one of the nicest (although having power 
steering would indeed be nice - it steers like a truck!). It has all the 
features of the larger later machines - live and auxiliary hydraulics, 
live PTO, 5 speed plus TA, full instrumentation, Fast Hitch, etc. in a 
size that is useful for doing "chore" operations around my place. I 
admit that I finally converted mine to 12 volt alternator after fighting 
with hard starting any time the temperature dropped below freezing - the 
rear mounted 6 volt battery just couldn't make it. I am not in the 
market for another tractor right now, but when the time comes, it will 
be for a 340U like Paul Sigmund's.
