	Many cornpickers and combine gearboxes used grease only in them. I 
always felt better using something like moly or teflon based grease in them.
 Years ago we had a stalk shredder that used grease in the box. For some
 reason it said on the box to NOT use graphite grease. I'm not sure why. "Oildag" 
was considered an early super lubricant.
	Maybe you could run about 5 or 10% gear lube and the rest grease?
 Sometimes those bottom seals get ragged out even though the bearings are
 tight due to wire or long stems wrapping the shaft. Some of the old waxy greases 
 that got hard were not suitable but most of the new stuff is better. As you say, 
better some lube than no lube.
