Bear,
In Janurary 1962 When White bought Cockshutt (after buying Oliver), they
used the Oliver built tractors for both names up through 1972. Cochshutt had
just developed a new combine and Oliver had just closed their outdated plant
in Battle creek Michigan. This Cockshutt combine had many new features and
became the Oliver (and later M.M) model. The name and color were changed due
to the larger U.S. customer base developed by Oliver. This combine sold well
in northern U.S. and was still Cockshutt red in Canada where it had already
developed a strong following due to a superior design. This line of combines
continued through 1986 when White Canada closed and they sold the line to
Massey Harris. Massey Harris held a world wide dominance of the combine
business although at times the combined sales of Cockshutt built combines
(Oliver,M.M., White, and Cockshutt brands) actually out sold them. The
greater number of these units were sold as White and Oliver combines, so are
quite common in the northern states.
