[AT] OT Need Software Suggestions

H.L. We have had E911 and a county wide "GIS" mapping system for a number
of years now too. Lots of counties in NC have that but the smaller, more
rural counties can't afford to do it.

Travis, the software that comes with a lot of hand held GPS units will plot
those sorts of maps. You can buy a hand held GPS for a couple of hundred
bucks and use to set "waypoints" at the locations you need to map. Then the
waypoints can be downloaded to the map software. It would be a poor man's
version of the "GIS" system and would probably have limitations in number of
waypoints and accuracy but it's better than nothing. You might also want
to look at the "placemarking" capability of Google Earth or Terra Server.

Travis----I have been told that the post office is eventuality going to
eliminate all rural route box numbers and that every location will be given
a physical address. The new address will also be used as part of the 911
location system. In our county we recently voted for enhanced 911 and for
cell phone locater for emergency help.

The county is now in the process of assigning every location a new address
with a GPS map location at the drive way turnoff.

The point of this ramble is somewhere in the 911 system may be just what you
need, or at least someone that can help.

BTW we may be way behing the rest of you.
