Ron:

It sounds like you have a glow plug that is shorted to ground or one of the
glow plug jumper wires is shorted to ground.  I would bet on the short being
adjacent to the plug that is burning out.  I suppose it is also possible
that someone has installed a glow plug of the wrong resistance/voltage.  If
you're bound and determined to modify the system, I believe that there are a
couple of fellows at the Yahoo group who have done this modification.
