Thanks, Andy, for asking about numerical data. The J. I. Case Threshing Machine Company built 35,838 engines. Of these, 35,836 had been produced by 1924. A 65 HP portable was built in 1925, and an 80 HP portable was built in 1926. To get an accurate count of the number of firms that manufactured agricultural engines is next to impossible because many companies that produced a few portable engines in the early years have been forgotten. I am including a list of Ohio manufacturers (below). I have omitted several Cincinnati firms that were too small and too long ago to mention.
Ohio Manufacturers of Farm Steam Engines and Steamrollers
Unless otherwise indicated, these manufacturers produced steam-powered farm engines. The development of the steamroller is partially interwoven with the history of agricultural engines because a number of farm engine factories built steamrollers. One or two firms listed below are predecessors to other firms on this roster, and various manufacturers on this list produced relatively few machines. A handful of predecessors are not named. Ohio had an impressive array of companies that manufactured agricultural engines and rollers-the highest number of such firms in any single state.
