Actually, Kevin, there is room, but you have to build a special mounting 
bracket. At least that is what I did. See:

The alternative is to use virtually any late model Japanese car 
alternator - the darn things aren't much bigger than your fist. You can 
probably find one at a reasonable price in an auto salvage yard. You 
need the wiring diagram and possibly an external voltage regulator.
