Hi Al,
Here is what a friend of mine in the Boone area says:
About the only other decent pass through the mountains is to come up through
where I live...from Morganton into Newland and on over to Johnson City and
hit I-81 or take the "southern route" and go to Spartanburg and catch I-26
which is now 4 lane interstate all the way to Johnson City. Either route
compared to 40 is longer and out of the way if he is trying to get to
Nashville. I reckon folks fear the French Broad gorge from Waynesville down
to Newport. As far as I know it is open currently. I haven't heard of any
slides lately. They are always working on it though so I figure there will
be plenty of lane shifts and road construction. It's really not as bad as
folks make it out to be.
Now this is my take on it. I agree with what he says and I have one
addition. Go up to the Winston Salem area and take I-77 (?) north through
Fancy Gap Va. (beautiful scenery) then catch I-81 back south to the Bristol
VA/TN area. That will put you in the far NE corner of TN and from there you
can choose from various routes to get around the state. Actually I went to
Nashville a few years ago. I went on I-40 and came back via I -40 to I-81
in TN and then I-77 back to I-40 at Greensboro/Winston Salem. I couldn't
tell much difference in time or mileage but I wasn't really keeping track.
The interstate through Fancy Gap is fairly steep but not near as bad as
Black Mountain on I 40 in my opinion and it's a much newer highway.
>From where you live the Spartansburg route isn't a bad idea. Run down I 95
to I 20 to I 26.
