[Farmall] lets talk Farmalls

OK, you asked for it; I have finally reached full speed on my '54 Super H Distillate project since recovering from my accident. A while back I decided that this tractor is going to be my show tractor for years to come so I'm pulling out all the stops. There will be nothing in this one that isn't as good or better than new. I bought all of the parts for the bolster and was dismayed to find that the play in the main shaft was still there so.... I turned down the large OD at the bottom of the shaft, sleeved it and turned the OD of the sleeve to fit the new bushing. Gee I'm happy. Decided I'm sick of making gaskets and o-rings so I bought them all from IH. Gee they're happy. Also decided to replace all of the bearings. Did you know that most of the bearings in IH tractors are metric? I do now. BTW, if anyone is interested I can supply all of the metric ID numbers for the axles, transmision, differential etc.. I found that McMaster Carr is the best bet for bearings although there are a few they don't have. IH dealer is best for the transmission pilot bearing (30% of the price I got from the local bearing supply guy.) Between M.Carr, dealer and bearing guy, bearings and seals for the tractor came to about $450. Am I crazy or what? I saw that the common fix for the steering u-joint is a new aftermarket one for around $46. You have to cut the ears off of the original shaft to use it. I thought what would the correct police say? My IH dealer set me up with just the spider assy. for
$11. In the frustration department, I bought a "perfect" dual fuel hood on ebay about a year ago and had a friend in Michgan pick it up for me to save on shipping. He was in the area last week and delivered it. I was like the dad in "A Christmas Story" opening up the box........... I would have preferred the lamp. Saddest part is I don't have the seller info anymore. Oh well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I have had relatively good luck with ebay. The good news is I do have the original hood which IS perfect, just pitted. That's enough.
Also..Thanks to all who went in on the Red Power and Antique Power subcriptions for me when I was hurt. Great reading!!

Well since nobody else wants to talk Farmalls I'll talk to myself.

It's time to topdress wheat in my area so we need to make sure the M is
ready to go. I've spoke of this lovable old workhorse many times but for
those who don't remember it has a mounted John Blue ground driven spray rig.
Does a great job of spraying nitrogen.

The M has always planted corn for us but I've given up on growing corn and
am only planting beans and wheat now. I've also gone fully to no-till. All
this means that the only field work for the M will be spraying nitrogen in
March. I used to pull my cultipacker with it. It sure sounded great doing
that job.

The planned paint job for the Cub is on hold due to sinus surgery I will be
having next week. Doc won't let me go back to work for 2 weeks because the
air there is too dirty. He even wants me to wear a dust mask this summer
around the farm. Maybe by May things will be healed enough to start cleaning
a tractor and painting (obviously I'll be wearing a repirator).

Anybody else got red tractors in their future???????

John Hall
