[AT] Left or right combines?

If you find an old pull type combine in my area (S.E. NC) it seems like
it will almost always be a bagger machine if it was built before the mid
to late '50s.  My 42R and my first 52R IH are both bagger machines.  I
had to go out-of-state to find a 52R tanker!

I don't think I've ever seen a combine that had a real factory bagging
attachment on it but maybe someday someone will bring one to a show.

The combine I bagged behind in 59 & 60 was a then late model IH self
propelled machine... I have no idea what its' model number was.  I would
guess the head was 12 feet give or take a couple of feet.  It did not
have a
cutter bar or reel but a pickup attachment that was probably half as
wide as
the head.  The homemade bagging platform was maybe two feet off the
ground
and the bottom of the Y inverter was maybe four feet above the platform.
The small homemade grain tank that fed the Y inverter would hold maybe
the
equivalent of two or three sacks of beet seed.  I could barely touch the
top
of this tank when standing on the platform.  This farmer was a very good
fabricator and his modification/add on could almost pass for factory.
His
design added a horizontal auger which allowed the output grain to
by-pass
the combines holding tank and go straight to the small tank on back.
The
only problem we had with this design was when we had the occasional
mishap
on back - like a broken needle or a busted bag - which caused us to get
behind and the small holding tank would overflow.

My Dad's Case model A had a bagging attachment as I recall. A small pipe
sticking out the bottom of the hopper and a little platform nearby
although
I can only guess how it was meant to work as we never used that method
here.
Grain was allowed to fill the hopper (25 bushels or so) and then augered
out
into the truck box.
Now that I think about it this combine also had the little rotary
cleaner up
on the top of the hopper. I wonder if this spout on the outside of the
hopper was to direct the weed seeds into bags?
