[AT] trimming the fleet and not being able to go to site

Actually this time it is true. Seems folks have been playing with XP and
pirating it. MS is now tracking the software activation numbers they
give out and will start looking at XP machines that update to see if
that activation number is being used more than once. They are also
changing things WRT the way OEMs will be using XP. Up until last month
OEMs would use XP with the activation tied to the BIOS in the machine.
So if you bought a Dell the Dell OEM XP disc would look to make sure you
were installing it onto a machine with a Dell BIOS. The problem was that
it would install on ANY machine with a Dell BIOS and then you just
called and told MS that you had changed things around and they would
give you the number to fire it up. They finally figured this out and now
OEMs will not be able to do this. If you need to reinstall it you will
have to call like everyone else, plus they plan on eliminating the web
activation feature as well. I guess they are going to get tough on
security and pirating now.

I doubt any of this will affect anyone who isn't running XP/ XP pro
though.
