[Steam-engine] Oilers for Crosshead slides

Rick,
As others have already said, drip oilers are suitable anywhere. For oil, if
you have a local Chevron dealer, Chevron 150X and 460X is the way I go. The
150X is an external lubricating oil. According to Chevron " This oil will
emulsify with water. This lathering action resists the washing effect of
saturated steam in reciprocating engines. Easy cleanup makes it ideal to
brush on finished surfaces for winter layup. Feeds readily through wicks or
drip feed oilers." The 460X is a cylinder oil. The X, in both cases, means
it is emulsifying. If you are running a condensing engine, you would use
non-emulsifying oil. There has been a lot of precious talk about external
lubricants. I think the 150X is top of the line. Incidentally, no one has
made mention of an oiler, primarily used for vertically moving parts such as
wrist and crank pins. This is an inertial oiler that looks like a drip
oiler. However, brass covers most of the oil reservoir as a protection. When
the oiler changes direction at the top and bottom of the stroke, a little
piston inside the reservoir, is thrown up or down to pump a shot of oil.
Length of the stroke is controlled by a key on top. More feed with a longer
stroke. You will not see many of these around.
