Not sure where this came from but the figure I have always thought of was
about 500 BTU. inactive.

Seems that this figure came from an air conditioning planning or guide book.
 

Not sure what kind of activity a young man would have to be up to, to expend
the energy of 500 kitchen matches per hour.  Seems to hot for me. ??? thirty
years ago.  Maybeeee !!!
