[AJD] 720D Pony Motor Starter Problem

Starter motor for Pony runs but will not engage into flywheel of pony motor.  
I took the starter off the pony motor and cleaned it up and WD-40'd the heck 
out  of her. Starter motor turns over great but gear will not kick out to 
engage. I  have never taken one of these apart. Any ideas? It was working great 
until about  a week ago. I can move the bendix gear freely on the shaft, in and 
out and just  don't know what it could be. HELP !!     Thanks, Tom
