Cecil, you're correct. I did it yesterday, there was nothing to shim. Took  
longer to drain the fluid than change the shaft. Just waiting for the Permatex  
gasket to set before I check it out. Thanks for the help.

I have replaced a bunch  of them, about 30 years ago.  I do not  remember 
shimming the  bearings.....
