[AJD] Serial Number Plate

Spencer,

I was fortunate enough to be able to replace a missing serial number plate on a 420U that I came by about 5 years ago. I had to do it through a local dealer and also the JD Territorial Manager who verified the tractor. The Dubuque tractors had a separate engine serial number that was recorded in the factory log book and this was cross referenced at the Archives to locate the tractor number. The Waterloo tractors never had a separate engine number and that is why you can't come up with a number for them once it is lost. The replacement serial number plate is the new variety that includes a bar code also. I purchased an original reproduced plate from a company in Iowa and stamped the number myself. I have kept the JD replacement tag as verification of the tractor, but put the original look tag on the tractor. It might be tough to find a dealer who will go the extra mile and help a person do the verification. Deere has a special form that has to be completed and signed by the dealer and TM to get the ball rolling. Good luck.

I listened to a story from a fellow who first hand had a serial number
plate replaced. He said that two items on the tractor had their own
number on them: The magneto and something else(wish I could remember).
He said as long as he could show them those two parts with those two
numbers and the build logs agreed, they were happy and the tag was
replaced. I can't remember though if this was a Waterloo built or
Dubuque(I imagine Waterloo???). I do remember for sure that the effort
had to be done through the local dealer. You could not contact John Deere
directly and have them do it.

Again, this is just what this one fellow at our local show, who claims to
have gone through the process, said. Take it with a grain of salt.
