[AT] Backing up tractor pictures and degenerating into a ramble.

I knew when I posted that calculation that I was opening myself up for
flames. You do that sort of thing not because you need things to do, or
to prove that you can do it, but simply to satisfy a fundamental
curiosity to bring things down to a level of comprehension that people
(including myself) can relate to. Converting numbers into tangible
shapes and sizes is a convenient way to teach a lot of complex subjects.
Anything to help a student visualize a concept is fair game.

When I used to have to teach students about the seven layers that are
inherent in computerized arrays, there was no easier way than to compare
it to a library. Most people are familiar with rows and columns in a
spread sheet, but when it comes to additional layers they have trouble
visualizing them. So, I used to tell the students to think of a library
full of typical furniture and books. The seven levels then became: Row,
Column, Page, Volume, Shelf, Rack, and Room. And for those that
couldn't remember which has priority -- row or column -- I told them,
"Just remember the advertising phrase 'Me and my RC.'"

Old professors like me never give up.

FWIW, I did the calculation to see what the equivalent stack of 3.5
floppies for a 160 Gigabyte would be. It's a stack approximately 5
feet
by 5 feet by 8 feet.
