[Ford-ferguson] Stuck 8N Clutch

It must be a "Ford thing", Steve. Even if you buy a brand new New 
Holland tractor today, you will find a little block of wood in the tool 
box with a decal that tells the owner to insert it under the clutch 
pedal in a certain place to prevent the clutch from sticking if the 
tractor is not to be used for a while. :-)

I have had only one other tractor clutch stick, and that was a Farmall 
140 that had been sitting in a field for at least ten years. But it 
released after only a few feet of pulling with the pedal down and never 
gave me any problem after that. So it must be a Ford thing. Since the 
materials used in Ford clutches are no different (as far as I know) from 
any other friction plate clutches used in other machinery, I have to 
think it must be related to the location of the mechanism or the design 
of the housing that attracts/retains moisture. Maybe Ford clutches don't 
get hot enough in operation to drive off moisture? I know that my Ford 
tractor engine blocks never seem to get anywhere near as hot as the 
blocks on other makes of tractors I have.
