[AJD] wico "c" mag guts

Nick:

I would suggest you take this project on, one component at a time. I get the
feeling you are so frustrated that instead of using a rifle to isolate the
problem you may be contemplating the use of a shotgun.

Potential problems you have listed are:

1.) Spark Plugs
2.) Timing
3.) Magneto
4.) Cam shaft timing.

But there may be other issues contributing as well, such as the settings on
the carburetor. Or the ignition wiring.

The only way to solve the problem is to isolate the potential problems, one
at a time and then either fix them and move on or eliminate them as a real
problem.

I would suggest approaching the problem in this order:

1.) If you know the cam shaft isn't timed right where the gears mate, fix
that first just to eliminate that issue.
2.) Then follow the procedure listed in the Operators Manual to properly
time the magneto.
3.) Then determine if you are getting the spark at the right time and it is
of adequate quality. If not, send the magneto to Duane for a complete
checkup and overhaul as required. Also check wires.
4.) Then see where your operating performance is after all that. If you
still have to replace your plugs every time then you have at least one of
four problems:
5.) Carburetor running too rich
6.) Rings and/or valves need work - Low compression and/or oil passing rings
7.) Wrong plugs or incorrect heat range
8.) A combination of the above three

Just a wholesale swap of all the parts in the magneto is a shotgun approach
and may not even solve the real problem until you isolate what the real
problem is.

Here is another idea. Know anyone who has a similar magneto that you could
borrow to test on your tractor? That would be a quick way to isolate the
problem to the magneto or not.

I can't recall what plugs are in it...... d-21 comes to mind..... does
that mean anything to you? what do would it cost for all the guts, I still
have the gaskets, housing, and dist cap that you sent me, still in box,
waiting for my round to it of fixing the rest of the mag up. also, Ive had
suspicions that my tractor is not quite timed right.... and I think
somebody had the cam and all that apart before I got to it, so since the
marks don't line up proper, how should I go about timing the silly thing.
Id go hotter if that would help, Id really love to be able to just go out
and start it with out having to tinker every single time.
