Well friends, I have been following this thread with much interest but have
refrained from saying anything but feel that now I must jump in. My wife & I
have been(were) regular campers and exhibitors at Portland for many years.
About 3 yards ago we began to experience the joys of getting older
(disabled). I can no longer go down to Portland and join in on the "land
rush" to secure our camping spot. I approached several Directors and asked
if there was some way our usual spot could be roped off for us and that I
would make a considerable donation to the club for that consideration. I was
told flat out NO. I noted that sever Directors were already doing this for
friends etc. I again was told NO and that practice was being heavily
discouraged. OK so be it. In other words "we really don't care if you come
or not".
Our handicap vehicle is a John Deere gator and is operated with 2 state
issued handicap permits, one for me and one for my wife. The gator is no
longer are acceptable as it do not meet the requirements. In other words,
"NO, we really don't care if you come or not". Ell of a way to treat the
older generation that assisted in building the show to what is is today. I
doubt that we will ever attend Portland ever again is spite of all the good
times, good friends and memories that we made there. In my opinion, Portland
has gotten way too big for the small minds that are in charge at the
present. I know it's a lot of work and thankless also but when suggestions
are made, money is donated etc. with no consideration for those who made the
show what it is, well I guess I will welcome those who are thrown on the
"scrap pile" when you arrive. Have a great time and for a moment, pause and
remember those who proceeded. John Grant
