John,
        The parts manual he got from Binder Books shows that there were
three engines available for it.  The smallest was the Cub engine, the
middle was the Farmall A engine, and the largest was something else
(Farmall H maybe?).  The one my friend has is the middle one.  Each
engine had a distinctly different radiator grille, which is part of the
way to ID them.  If it was the Cub engine, then the J4 would be right. 
Most of the balers I have seen have had the Cub engine, but there is one
that is up for sale somewhere in the Eastern US that has the same motor
we have.  One of the listers sent a photo to me, I can send it to you if
you would like.  I have never seen the largest one.

Didn't the 55 baler have a cub engine in it?  I don't have it here, but 
the manual for the baler engine I have on loan showed a J4 mag I'm 
pretty sure.
