[AJD] Late Three Brush Generator Specifics Found.

Duane,

I had a chance to look at the switch this evening. The switch has three
positions. I believe them to be OFF-MEDIUM-HIGH.

When looking at the back of the switch, there is a thin wire wound loosely
around what I believe to be a piece of porcelain. The wire is exposed and
not encased in the material. This may be a fuse. If it were a resistor it
would have to be heavier gauge that this appears. Or could it be a
resister? My guess is that it's an old style fuse. (Like the kind where
the wire would break if it got too hot.) It appears to be attached to
both terminals as if it were a diode. Looking further around the back
panel, I didn't see anything that looked like a resistor like the
replacements you can buy here...

(with apologies to "Sharp's Antique Tractor Works, Inc." for using their
picture.)

So....based on your previous statement, we would not expect to find a
resistor on this tractor, and using a regulator would be OK. Right?

Whew! I need an aspirin. Too much thinking for one day.... :)

Paul,
Your generator has the correct model number, but the serial indicates it was
built January 15, 1947, which means the original generator and (probably)
regulator has been replaced by this older generator/cutout unit.

Look at your light switch - there should be no resistor present at the
switch - it would be there if the system used a generator/cutout unit with a
3-brush generator.

You can replace the cutout with a regulator - either a positive ground one,
or a universal ground one. They should not be hard to find at NAPA or some
such.

Let me know about the light switch/resistor question.
Regards,
Duane
