[AT] 100 year old stumps are nasty

    Cecil;
    The fellow who put in my tile brought along a Caterpillar 4 wheel drive
backhoe with a ripper tooth. This was the fastest way I had ever seen stumps and
trees removed and with the least damage to the ground. He would cut the brace
roots about 2 or 3 feet from the tree all around then with the spike under the
center, would lift it right out of the ground. He did this with standing trees
also. After the stump was removed, a few passes through the ground with the
ripper would bring up all the roots. All ready to level with the dozer.
    My preferred way is to dynamite the tap root with a small charge of 2 to 4
sticks of dynamite and then push them out with the dozer. With the tap root cut,
the brace roots come out pretty easy and with a lot less power. This way is more
fun too. We can still get dynamite permits for clearing agriculture land in our
county. New York may be a lot more strict.

                    Gene

: Any comments from anyone who has pulled stumps like these with heavy
: equipment would be appreciated. I have no problem running either of these
: machines as I have been in the seat of them and had no problem with it. As you
: probably figured, I intend to run the machine myself.
