[Steam-engine] Check Valves

Two different kinds come to mind when you say "poppet
check".  I probably have my terminology wrong.  Is the
poppet check the one that is cylindrical and slightly
larger than the pipe?  OR? Is it one that has is
installed in the horizontal position with a poppet
inside that moves up and down?
