If you get a consistent way of measuring ingredients you have little to
lose. I suggest building small (like 1 cubic foot ea.) plywood boxes to
measure out your sand, gravel, portland cement etc. and gallon jugs for
water. It will make your mix uniform. I can dig up a "hand mix" recipe we
used on a job once that we had strength tested, but it will take me a few
days to find it.

The only disadvantage is that it will take a long time and be back-breaking
work. What is the size and desired thickness of your new slab and what is
the capacity of the mixer?
