[AT] tri-axle trailer question

The way I read this is with a class D:
1.  You can drive any vehicle less than 18,000 GVW  (All pickups, and lots
of F450,F550 type medium dutys)
2.  You can pull any trailer less than 10,000 GVW.  You can even use your
18,000 truck to pull it. (28,000 max total GCWR)
3.  You can pull any trailer more than 10,000 GVW as long as total GCWR is
less than 26,000

4.  You can argue the point that you can use your 26,000 RV to pull a 10,000
trailer (which many people do without any legal hassles) - that is 36,000
total!

I think these rules are pretty close to USDOT and most other state DOT
rules.

Not true steve, look at this site http://www.nysdmv.com/forms/cdl101.pdf you
must have a class A, or a Class A endorsement to tow anything over 10000
pounds legally in NY.  To even drive a truck with a gvw over 18000, you need
at least a Class C non-CDL.  A normal Class D license does not allow you to
drive over 18000 GVW, or tow more than 10000.

Not that I pay any attention to it... ;-)

Only IF the towing vehicle has a GCWR of more than 26,000 pounds.

It is a requirement like this that is catching the Florida people. They buy
some of these new vehicles with HEAVY tow ratings and then find out that
federal law requires them to have a CDL.
