Amperage is the force of the electrons though  the wire the more you have the 
more wire you need to control it.  12 volt  systems use less amperage to get 
the same result as the 6 volt system which will  need twice the amperage. 
therefore you get more push from the battery and need a  larger wire. 
I hope this helps. think of electricity as water the  voltage is the amount 
and the amperage is the size of the pump (pressure)
1  volt = 6.25 X10 to 14 power of electrons to pass a given point. That's 
whole lot  of them.
1,000,000 volts won't kill you but add 1 amp and kiss your, well,  you get it.
