Yes, you were lucky - many diesel engines will not bleed themselves, no 
matter how long they run. It doesn't really matter if the engine is 
running or not when you bleed the injectors, but it will go quicker and 
easier if it is running.

The same here in NJ. I did put the charger on the Farmall 560D, since 
the voltage regulator isn't working, and I like to keep the batteries up 
in case I need the tractor. The nice thing about the diesel is that, 
once it is running, it doesn't matter if the batteries don't get 
charged. :-) But I do have to replace that regulator one of these days...
