Only in New Jersey, for reasons that nobody knows, except that the law
dates back to the 1930's. I suspect it was the result of one or more
fires caused by idiots pumping their own gas.

It has been suspected that the independent service station owners lobby
keeps the law from being revoked in order to prevent the company owned
gas stations from squeezing them out by offering low prices for "pump
your own" fuel. As it happens, gasoline in NJ is generall lower priced
than everywhere but Texas and Oklahoma. But that my have more to do with
the tax rate than the cost of the fuel.

It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and
groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more
desolation. War is hell. -William Tecumseh Sherman, Union General in the
American Civil War (1820-1891)
