The smoothest running engines are odd numbers remember when Mercedes went to 
the 5 cylinder, it was for better balance than the 4 or the 6 clyinder. 
The roughest running is the V4, I have one in my Saab Sonnet and it uses a 
balance shaft to keep it in the car.  I you want real smooth running the old 16 
cylinders were really something. Radial engine are smooth running because the 
cylinders turn and the crank stays in one place. most of them are odd numbered 
also. the big 4360 that I worked on many years ago was 4 rows of 7 cylinders.
