Don; I think you may have something in the "didn't care as much" thing. That
left side of the block was a thin place and vulnerable to freezing. The
tractors were lower priced, probably cheaper built in some areas, and
considered a "throw away" machine by many folks who used them. I have a
cousin who let his 45 freeze up and break, (in that exact area behind the
carb), two years running. A case, I feel, of sheer stupidity.
I also know that some other brands didn't break on the sides of the block
when they froze, but I do think that ANY time a tractor freezes up in cold
weather, it's the fault of the owner/operator, not the tractor.
