[AT] Reagan Remembered (by Patti Davis) Off topic but greatreading

I'm an agriculture teacher and spend my summer working with students as
well. I sat down to look at my schedule this summer, and counting going
on vacation for 5 days, I have less than 10 days that I am not taking
students to FFA Camp, State FFA Convention, or attending inservice
classes before school begins again. I'll use those 10 days in my office
to plan lessons for next year, update my files, visit students, etc.
That's just my summer. During the school year, in addition to teaching
during the regular class period, we are constantly working on FFA
activities, preparing for career development events, working with their
supervised ag. Experience projects, etc. Leaving school by 5PM is often
considered a "short day." Before anyone asks, FFA is NOT
"extracurricular." It is an integral part of the high school
agricultural education program, as specified by federal charter. Most
weekends, I go out to school for a few hours, sometimes just to make
sure the greenhouses are OK, most of the time to catch up on paper work,
lesson plans, etc.

I'm not poo-pooing a garbage collector, or anyone else. They work hard
for what they make, just like I do. I would bet there are some garbage
men in large cities that have a better benefits package than I do! I
receive the same retirement benefits and health coverage as any other
state employee. Please don't criticize me or my profession, claiming
that I am soft, lazy, or don't do my job, or that my job is not
important.
