[Steam-engine] Drill Doctor

Considering the cost of the tooling, sharpening the edges of the flutes
isn't worth it. Just use them in spite of the dings. For one thing, the
drill would be undersized.

The $12.95 attachment that uses the side of a grinding wheel has its
pitfalls, too, although I've done a whole bunch of sharpening on them.

For one thing, the distance between the sharpening jig and the wheel needs
to be adjusted according to the bit size. If this isn't closely attended
to, the relief angle on the cutting edge will be all wrong. It's a big
surprise to take a freshly sharpened bit, only to discover it won't make a
hole. Been there. Done that. :-)

Orrin,

I agree with you on that statement, but actually I was
just using the bucket as an example of the quantity of
items that I found. I found machinest box after
machinest box of tooling and drill bits. The tooling
I can take care of, but all of those drills really
caught my fancy because I don't have much tooling and
he has a wheelbarrow full that he doesn't use.

I have considered buying the attachment for my sears
grinder to sharpen tooling, but right now I am just
looking for ideas. How do I sharpen the sides and
what would that cost me to purchase?

Thank you,

Jeff
