Mike,
Your procedure for loosening the nut is the usual way - but some of us have
found using a candle on the heated threads when they are still to hot to
support a liquid penetrant (it boils away) will help.  The candle melts and
flows between the stuck threads and nut and seems to help in removal of the
nut.  This should be an easy time of year to find a candle - just don't pick
the one from the Christmas centerpiece :).
