[Steam-engine] Combustion Chamber

On return flue boilers the smoke goes to the front
through the large fire flue then turns around and
moves to the back through the smaller tubes. The area
in the front where the turn around takes place is
called the combustion chamber. On a huber you can
open the front of the combustion chamber much like the
smokebox door on a locomotive boiler. There is also a
small door that can be propped open at the bottom of
the combustion chamber. Brice went to considerable
trouble to seal the large chamber door to prevent air
entering there. How important is it to seal the
combustion chamber? How tightly does it need to be
sealed? Is the little door at the bottom only for
cleaning ashes or do you open it during work? Seems
to me like it should stay closed because opening it
would hurt the draft across the fire.
