Jim,

Do you have some favorite steam car links that you could copy here? Sounds
like something I'd at least like to read up on...

Well Ken, there is the alternative world of steam automobiles. They are
exempt from inspections, much easier to transport, not as hot to be around
on an August day and much more fun. Best of all a new boiler for a Stanley
is about $3500.

Well.... I am Slowly getting fed up with the constant hassle of yearly
inspections. Seems like they are constantly picking for something to shut
you down. It's a lot of hassle to get 2 engines ready to hydro then dry them
out just to run them one day a year.

I hear rumors of some shows running engines over the calculated MAWP. Some
shows are putting in for extensions to get by one more year before they have
to UT and reduce their pressure due to appendix C. When they knew what was
required for the last 2 years. Some will do the absolute minimum just to get
by.... Here we have to PROVE a tensilt strength of at least 55,000 to get to
use a SF of 4. Otherwise have to use 5. And believe me when you apply a SF
of 5 to an aged boiler you usually don't get a very high MAWP. I hear of
some engines previously running 100 to 125 that now have a new MAWP of 40 to
60 PSI.

I was looking over at Ryndas for a small engine to get a new ASME boiler on
but didn't find anything I liked that I felt was worth the money. I am
considering selling my 24 Minnie as it is just too heavy to move around
although I don't have to UT again for another 5 years and still have the 145
PSI I started out with 20 years ago.

Haulling is another issue. I had some Bad experience a few years ago, Seemed
some shows were getting Bargain Basement trucking. When you see them Knock a
block out and see a side mounted engine rumble down the ramps and Bounce off
the ground it makes you wonder just how much it will take... I have seem
them wind down them screw type load binders almost to the point of
breaking... Have seen some engines arrive with Missing/Broken chains ect. A
friend of mine lost his 24 Minnie a few years ago... The trucker had 2
engines on the lowboy tied down with 3 chains. Well, one broke and there
were 2 engines upside down on the road...The last few years I have only
moved the Case, I haul it myself, Push it on here with the tractor and
unload it and load it under steam at the show. I like to tie down engines by
the rear wheels with chains in front and back just for safety and to satisfy
the DOT. Takes a lot of strain off the boiler.

Lately I have enjoyed taking a couple gas engines to the shows, Sitting in
the shade and talking smart... and the nice part is you can turn in the
needle valve and walk off to see what the steam guys are doing.... No Wet
Punky wood or Bad coal problems and I can carry the water I need in a 5
gallon pail....
