I used STP in a motorcycle and it etched to aluminum casing where I spilled
some on it. Never used it again. I used to use Lubriplate for the bearing but
over the years have found that just using the correct oil to prelube all the
bearing and the pistons and sleeves is sufficient. You really don't need to
prime the oil pump if you do this. Remember every time that you restart the
engine it starts up without being primed and as we all know no one has ever lost an
engine due to this. I don't know where this got started but I think it was
just one of those old wives tales.
When I worked at Sharpe Army Depot we built 10 engines a day on the small
engine line and never primed one and never had any trouble with not getting oiled
at startup. They also rebuilt Cat D-7 4 cylinder engines and we never lost
one of those either. I rebuilt a few D-7s after that at while at Fort Ord and
had no trouble and i never primed an oil pump in my life. But if it makes you
feel better it won't hurt anything.
