As hard as it probably was to write those checks, I say it was

This has been the year for expensive work
on my Ford 3600. A fuel line leak a few months ago had
already resulted in a trip to the local CaseIH/New Holland
shop, and while it was there I had them replace the underslung
orchard exhaust with a conventional vertical muffler (orchard
exhaust made hay-ride type operations problematic, and seemed
pointless given the ROPS/canopy on the tractor). Barely a
month after getting it back I was mowing one day and noticed
the tach cable had broken and the tach and hour meter were no
longer working, and then not long after that the PTO stage of
the two-stage clutch stopped working, couldn’t engage the PTO
without first shutting off the engine.

So back it went to the farm service shop.
Turned out the pressure plate fingers were worn out so the fix
was a new clutch, but while getting the tractor apart and back
together and testing it, they noticed leaks at the fuel
injectors and the hydraulic pump so I had them fix that stuff
too. Total bill this time came to $3511, on top of the $2650
from a few months ago. Lot of money for a little old
tractor, but it’s handy as can be and I’d hate to sell it and
try my luck with some other old beast. Right pretty little
thing, too, especially all clean and fresh from the shop.
Here’s a photo from today, as they were unchaining it prior to
winching it back down off the truck. (Yep, that front tire
was low… I filled it back up right after getting the tractor
on the ground).
