Dean VP, whew, sounds like I dodged a bullet concerning the
potential disintegration of that dented muffler on the 620. Some wise
person I know advised me a few years ago about what to look for, so the 620 has
been equipped with the non-dent correctly-baffled version for a while
now. For fun I just now made a little video as a companion to the
Super M muffler test: <A

The green tractor also didnāt come up empty-handed in this
latest purchase from Steinerā¦ in addition to the muffler for the red tractor, I
bought a replacement cushion for the 620 seat backrest. Havenāt
gotten around to putting it on yet. ;)

I just looked at some old pictures of your 1958 JD 620
muffler, the one with a dent on the side for a steering shaft that isnāt there
on a 620. If and when you get around to ever changing that ālife
threatingā deficiency make sure you buy a muffler that has the original JD
baffles in it. The sound is different from the run of the mill aftermarket
mufflers on the market and of course doesnāt have the dent in it.
Right now I donāt remember if JD still sells that correct muffler or has gone
cheap. Steiner sells a restoration quality muffler for the 620
with the correct baffles supposedly but I donāt have an references on it.
Detwiler tractor parts used to make a correct muffler but I donāt see it on
their web site. Maybe that is where Steiner is getting their
muffler. The correctly baffled muffler wonāt have that deep
throat sound of your Super M. The muffler takes away the sharp edge of the
two cylinder sound you hear on a straight pipe it is more of a smooth puff,
puff. I didnāt realize how much a difference it made until I put one
on my 60. Even when pulling really heavy loads it doesnāt
bark. Depends on what sound you prefer. Iām a bit hard of
hearing so YMMV. Probably because I sat on

PS: Changing mufflers on the Farmall M before the JD 620 will
cause the 620 muffler to completely rust out and disintegrate where all the
dents are. š<SPAN
