Not a day for field work so I ran in fifth gear up some steep hills in the area instead. I got the temperature up to normal on the gauge and brought it back to the shop. Not a single molecule of coolant leaking anywhere. I’m pretty excited.<div><br></div><div>While it was up to temperature I took the opportunity to start the oil change. <pre wrap="">So I started on the replacement of the leaking freeze plug last night. Drained the radiator and the block. The block was draining heavily rusted water the last few inches. So getting that drained out was an unexpected plus.
First I started with a small pilot hole in the freeze cup, then fitted a corse threaded screw to my dent puller(MAC tools “Slammer hammer”) and threaded the rig in. I get two outcomes with this approach: the plug either pops right out or it deforms badly enough that just a few taps with a hammer and chisel will begin to unseat it. Then I can thread it in again and pull it out. Here is a few pics.
The culprit was a thin rusted out spot at the crease of the freeze cup. I’m glad I went ahead and took care of this. I don’t think this freeze cup would have lastedthe next season.
Hopefully I’ll get a chance to run by Napa and get a replacement today.
